The development of the South East Queensland Healthy Waterways Strategy 2007-2012 (the Strategy) attempted to take all relevant plans and strategies into account.

Relevant plans at the State level include:

The Strategy had a central role in the development of two significant regional policy and planning documents that were finalised in 2009:

  • The SEQ Regional Plan 2009-2031 (Regional Plan) was released by the State Government in mid-2009 and acknowledges the role of the Strategy in addressing aquatic ecosystem health and water quality issues
  • The SEQ Natural Resource Management Plan 2009–2031 (SEQ NRM Plan) sets out measurable targets for natural resources linked to the desired regional outcomes of the Regional Plan. Under the SEQ NRM Plan, targets are set for waterway maintenance, enhancement and restoration. Continued action under the Strategy is an important contributor to reaching these regional targets.

Additionally, the Draft South East Queensland Water Strategy identifies the SEQ Healthy Waterways Strategy as one of the key planning and implementation processes for achieving environmental values and total water cycle management for the region

At the local government level, each of the 11 local governments in South East Queensland continue to prepare and amend their plans to manage growth and development, and the majority have developed catchment management plans.
